High Tide is a gem hidden away somewhere in between Skid Row and the arts district of Little Tokyo. It's actually steps away from my old office, so I wasn't at all deterred by the landscape. While the outside is a bit rough, the inside is nothing short of adorable. Precisely why I chose this location to celebrate my friend, KaSandre's engagement!
In addition to the charming pink patio decor, what attracted me to High Tide was menu and, of course, I had to try their Frozé! We arrived at 4:00 pm, just missing brunch. However, they were able to accommodate my craving for an avocado toast and loads of other tasty treats remained on the lunch menu. We placed our order of avocado toast, two frozé frozen cocktails, ceviche, lobster mac & cheese, and oysters on the half shell (total with two drinks was just under $80) at the bar and grabbed a seat on the patio - it was far too nice to sit inside, but there is ample seating indoor.
The frozés were amazing. Just sweet enough without being overwhelming. And the food arrived quickly. I'll start with the avocado toast - it's pretty big. I found the hard crust a bit challenging and ultimately decided to forego it. Now, on to the oysters. Never tried them. Never had a desire to. But they presented really nicely and I was challenged to try something new... They weren't terrible but texture can make it or break it for me and I learned that oysters are not for me. At least I can say I tried. What I really loved, though, was the lobster mac & cheese. It was delicious and contained generous portions of both bacon and lobster. So savory! I'd return for a frozé and this dish alone!
High Tide is located at 605 East 4th Street in Downtown LA. There's plenty of metered street parking along Towne Avenue, but please read all signage.
